![]() ![]() It is no longer a mysterious magical process but a regular stage of post production like any other. VFX is commoditized now, there is no doubt about it. There are very few situations where CGI will blend seamlessly and those situations have to be planned for in advance. Even with all the modern technology CGI is not an ideal solution and often ends up looking unrealistic even at higher budgets. Because of their software based background, they are almost always completely unaware of traditional techniques and tend to over rely on CGI. ![]() On the senior side this is reflected too as these young ones eventually rise to senior positions. So half my review time is dedicated to teaching them these concepts so they know why their shot didn't get approved and why it doesn't look realistic. In my experience most Indian artists still struggle with the simple foundational concepts such as relative scale, multi point perspective and color theory. Where they are taught how to use the softwares but not why to use them, so they are heavily reliant on the latest software tools. ![]() Indian vfx artists largely come from institutes like Arena Multimedia, Maya Academy, etc. They can adapt to any new software/technique in a few weeks because they see these as a tool to achieve a goal, which means they are not dependent on the latest technology to achieve realism. Which makes these artists extremely flexible. They have a solid foundation and understanding of how the camera captures images and how eyes interpret realism. American vfx artists come from a fine art background. It is true that we are given very limited budgets, but the real issue is lack of formal training. While that is true, but the answer is not that simple. Most studio owners will say we don't have the budget. I run a vfx studio in India, so I feel compelled to answer this. What and where the hell are we going wrong? surely every director cant be incompetent idiots right? is it so tough to get this aspect of films right? The first Matrix came out 2 years earlier in 1999, still beats the crap out of the stuff we do now. The first harry potter film came out in 2001 and the VFX in that is also amazing. Can we not get something as simple as fire arrows to look right with 2017 vfx? Or this scene from Baijirao-, Why do the arrows look like its from a real time strategy game like Total war Rome or something? Why does it look like a video game from 2007!? is this Jallikkatu Simulator or something? Its not like we are hiring shitty studios to make the vfx/other effects, many times its the same studios that do hollywood movies and yet they just curb stomp the shit out of our stuff. Why is it that something made almost 17 years ago beats the shit out of the biggest movies we can make in 2017 with 2.5 billion rupee budgets? That whole scene is dont with so much thought to make you be in awe of "the race of men" and everything fits so perfectly. It feels like something that would actually exist like a middle earth "wonder of the world" The pose of the statues, the way the rock looks so realistically cut with the deliberate roughness in certain s just beautiful. I was rewatching Lord of the rings and I was blown away by how realistic this particular scene looked. ![]()
